Crew Member Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
About the Mission
The self-operating spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.
