A group of seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
